Dr. Tkachenko’s research interest in identity and music started during his PGCE in Secondary Music whilst working in inner London schools. This research culminated in an MA dissertation with The Open University entitled ‘the musical activities of the young Turkish-speaking community in London: identity and nationalism’ (published in 2005). Dr. Tkachenko’s PhD thesis ‘the real deal: professional klezmer musicians on a London world music scene’ examined authenticity in Jewish music.
Having spent the last five years working in an international school in Moscow building their instrumental music programmes, he became interested in the differences between the British and Russian approaches to instrumental music teaching. It is Dr. Tkachenko’s first year at Wellington Shanghai and he is keen to explore the interaction between the Chinese approach to instrumental music teaching (Western instruments) and the British curriculum offered at Wellington.
